The main errors encountered when connecting to FTP via FileZilla

When connecting to FTP, several errors may occur:

  • 530 Login authentication failed
  • TLS certificate issue
  • use of active mode

In this help article, we explain how to resolve these different errors.

530 Login authentication failed

This error indicates that the username or password used is incorrect or contains an error.

Here are the recommended actions when this error occurs:

  • Check your login and host: on an LWS Panel hosting plan, in your LWS customer area, open « Domain(s) & Hosting(s) », click « Manage » next to your domain, then « FTP account(s) » in the « Files » section. The « FTP users list » block shows each account login and its FTP server (ftp.your-domain or the server IP address), with an icon to copy them.
  • Change the password if you have forgotten it: it is not displayed on this page. Click « Change » on the account line. In the « Password change » window, enter a new password or click « Generate », write it down, fill in « New password confirmation », then click « Validate ». The full procedure is in How do I connect via FTP to my LWS Panel hosting?
  • Also check whether there is any space before your password/username or after it, as this can generate this type of error. Indeed, a space is considered a character.

TLS certificate error (The TLS connection was non-properly terminated)

This error may occur if your internet service provider blocks certain ports. Do not disable encryption to bypass it: first try, in this order, the two secure connections below.

  • Check your secure FTP connection (FTPS): on an LWS Panel hosting plan, enter your server name as the host, in the form webdbNNNN.lwspanel.com, on port 21, with the encryption « Explicit FTP over TLS ». The certificate presented by the server is a Sectigo certificate issued for « *.lwspanel.com ». The full procedure is in Secure FTP on LWS Panel: « *.lwspanel.com » certificate, TLS session resumption and SFTP.
  • Switch to SFTP: SFTP transfers your files over an encrypted SSH connection, on port 22, and does not use a TLS certificate. It uses SSH access, included from the Starter plan onward (not in the Perso plan or the domain plan). Its configuration in FileZilla is explained in the same help article.
  • Is your hosting managed under cPanel? Then see instead What FTP settings are required for an FTP client?

Disabling passive mode

It is possible that using passive mode during your FTP connection causes problems; you will then need to use active mode.

  • in passive mode, it is the FTP server that determines the port that will be used for file transfer
  • in active mode, it is the FTP client that determines which port to use

Conclusion

You are now able to know the main FTP connection errors on shared hosting with LWS. FTP connection errors are mainly due to a TLS issue.
