The main errors encountered in an FTP connection via FileZilla

During an FTP connection, several errors may occur:

  • 530 Login authentication failed
  • TLS certificate issue
  • use of active mode

In this guide, we explain how to resolve these different errors.

530 Login authentication failed

This error indicates that the username or password used is incorrect or contains an error.

Here are the recommended actions when this error occurs:

  • Submit a request to have the FTP connection settings associated with your domain resent via this link: https://panel.lws.fr/frperte.php
  • Change/reset this password. This can be done from your LWS customer area by following this procedure
  • Also check whether there is a space before your password/username or after it, which can cause this type of error. Indeed, a space is considered a character.

TLS certificate error (The TLS connection was non-properly terminated)

This error may occur if your internet service provider blocks certain ports; to work around this error:
Enable a "simple FTP connection (unsecured)" in your FTP transfer software by following this procedure: https://aide.lws.fr/a/1937

Video procedure:

Disabling passive mode

It is possible that using passive mode during your FTP connection may cause issues; you will then need to use active mode.

  • in passive mode, it is the FTP server that determines the port that will be used for file transfer
  • in active mode, it is the FTP client that determines which port to use

Conclusion

You are now able to identify the main FTP connection errors on shared hosting with LWS. FTP connection errors are mainly due to a TLS problem.
