What backup level should I choose for my web hosting?

This documentation helps you understand what data is backed up on your LWS service, how long it is retained, and depending on your plan, whether you can restore it yourself from the LWS Panel or if a management request is necessary.

Affected Services

This documentation is intended for customers with one of the following services:

  • a domain plan
  • a LWS Linux shared hosting
  • Pro email addresses
  • the Business Support option

Included restorations are carried out from the LWS Panel when your plan allows it.

Before You Begin

Before choosing a restoration, clearly identify:

  • the service involved in your request
  • the type of data to recover: web files, MySQL database, or email content
  • the target period: recent backup or older

In this documentation:

  • Included restoration means you can perform the action from the LWS Panel.
  • Management means you need to open a support request. The service to select is Backup Search, at the rate of 49 € excluding VAT.

What data is backed up on my services?

LWS performs daily backups of the data used on its relevant services. The backed-up items include:

  • the web files of your hosting
  • the MySQL databases
  • the content of email addresses

These backups concern domain plans, shared hosting managed with the LWS Panel, and Pro email services. However, the restoration options vary depending on the subscribed service.

How long are backups kept?

The retention of backups follows these rules:

  • the last 7 daily backups are kept
  • beyond 7 days, 1 weekly backup is kept, for a maximum of 2 months
  • beyond 2 months, 1 monthly backup is kept, for a maximum of 3 months of age

In total, you can therefore have 15 backup versions over the last 3 months for web files, MySQL databases, and email addresses.

How to know what you can restore?

The restoration options depend on your plan and the age of the backup sought.

1. You have a domain plan

You can request the restoration of web files and email content, but this requires a management request, for backups from 0 to 30 days as well as for those from 30 to 90 days.

2. You have Pro email addresses

The restoration of the email content of all email addresses associated with the domain is included for backups from 0 to 30 days and 30 to 90 days.

3. You have shared hosting managed with the LWS Panel

If you have an LWS Linux hosting plan, such as Perso, Starter, Standard, or Performance:

  • the restoration of web files is included for backups from 0 to 30 days
  • the restoration of MySQL databases is included for backups from 0 to 30 days
  • the restoration of email content requires a management request

For backups from 30 to 90 days, the restoration of web files, MySQL databases, and email content requires a management request.

4. You have a paid hosting with Pro email addresses

If you have both paid shared hosting and Pro email addresses:

  • the web files are restorable and included for backups from 0 to 30 days
  • the MySQL databases are restorable and included for backups from 0 to 30 days
  • the email content is restorable and included for backups from 0 to 30 days and from 30 to 90 days

However, for backups from 30 to 90 days, the web files and MySQL databases require a management request.

5. You have the Business Support option

With the Business Support option, the restoration of web files, MySQL databases, and email content is included, both for backups from 0 to 30 days and from 30 to 90 days.

IV. How to restore my data?

Step 1: Check if restoration is included or subject to management

Refer to your plan and the desired backup period.

  • If the restoration is included, you can follow the appropriate procedure from the LWS Panel.
  • If the restoration requires management, you need to open a request for intervention.

Step 2: Follow the correct procedure according to the type of data

If the restoration is included for your plan, use the corresponding documentation:

If your plan does not allow direct restoration, open a request via the dedicated documentation: How to open a managed support request.
In this case, select the service Backup Search – 49 € excluding VAT.

Frequent Issues

I don't know what plan I am using

The name of your plan is listed in the product listing on the homepage of your LWS account.

I don't see a restoration option in the LWS Panel

This usually means that restoration is not included for your plan or for the targeted backup period. In this case, a management request may be necessary.

I am looking for an old backup

Backups are only retained for a maximum of 3 months, according to the retention rules described above. If the requested date exceeds this period, the backup will no longer be available.

I restored the web files, but the site did not come back correctly

If your site also uses a MySQL database, restoring just the web files may not be sufficient. It may be necessary to restore the database as well to a date consistent with that of the files.

I want to restore only emails

The ability to restore email content depends on the subscribed service. With Mail Pro, restoration of email content is included. With other plans, it may require management support depending on your service level.
