VPS KVM: plans, resources, backups and limits

Procédure

LWS KVM VPS is a virtual server with dedicated resources (processor, memory, NVMe SSD disk), delivered with full root access: you are the one who administers it. It is available in four plans, S, M, L and XL. Each KVM VPS includes free daily backups for 30 days and up to 3 free snapshots. It is never fully managed: updates and server security remain your responsibility.

The four plans and their resources

The four plans have the same processor, the same bandwidth and the same root access. They differ in the number of cores, memory and disk space:

These are the resources shown on the sales page in November 2026. Prices, current promotions and commitment periods change regularly: check the LWS KVM VPS page before ordering.

Your own VPS resources (vCPU, RAM, local disk, IPv4 and IPv6 addresses) are displayed on the Overview page of the KVM panel. The steps to follow are explained in the help How to check the status and resources of your LWS VPS.

What each KVM VPS includes

  • Full root access via SSH, and a web terminal in the KVM panel, usable from your browser.
  • The KVM panel, opened via the Manage button in the Servers tab of your client area: reboot, soft shutdown (ACPI), forced shutdown, hardware reset, system reinstallation at any time, and graphs for CPU, memory, disk and network usage over a period from 1 hour to 30 days.
  • Choice of operating system: Ubuntu, Debian, AlmaLinux, Rocky Linux, Fedora, CentOS Stream or Arch Linux. The available versions are shown at checkout and in the Reinstallation section of the KVM panel.
  • One-click installed applications, to choose in the Apps & Panels tab of the order form or during a reinstallation: n8n, Docker CE, CapRover, Coolify, Portainer CE, WireGuard VPN, Plesk (license not included) and others. Some are only available starting with the VPS KVM M: the order form only shows those for the selected plan.
  • Network security: physical firewall that blocks intrusion attempts before your VPS, anti-DDoS protection, guaranteed 99.99% availability (SLA).
  • Hosting in France, in datacenters certified ISO 27001 and HDS.
  • 7 days a week technical support, via chat, ticket or phone.

Backups and snapshots

Automatic backups

Your KVM VPS is automatically backed up every morning, to a dedicated NAS. These backups are free for 30 days. After that, you can keep them for 20% of your VPS price.

Snapshots

A snapshot freezes your VPS state at a specific point in time. You can keep up to 3 at the same time, free of charge, and they remain available as long as your VPS is active. Create one just before an update or configuration change: if something goes wrong, you can revert to the previous state.

What the KVM VPS does not include

The sales page mentions automatic updates “if you opt for managed service”: this concerns another offer, the LWS VPS Server range, which is available in managed mode. Details of what LWS does in each case are in the help Managed VPS, root access or KVM VPS: who manages what?.

  • No hosting control panel provided: ISPConfig and HestiaCP are not installed by default. You can install a panel among the one-click applications, Plesk for example, but its license is not included.
  • No Windows for now: only Linux systems are offered.
  • No datacenter choice at checkout for now.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my server is a KVM VPS?

In your client area, open the Servers tab and look at the Plan column: a KVM VPS appears there as “KVM VPS S” (or M, L, XL), while a VPS Server appears as “LXC VPS M”.

How do I upgrade to a higher plan?

You can upgrade to a higher plan at any time, without interrupting your services or losing your data. If the KVM panel graphs show CPU or memory often above 80%, it is the right time. To request it, open a ticket from your client area (Support, then Contact support) and indicate your VPS reference (VPS-…) and the desired plan.

What happens after the 30-day free backup period ends?

You can continue to have your backups retained for 20% of your VPS price. To know what is active on your VPS, open a ticket from your client area and provide its reference. In all cases, keep a copy of your important data outside the server.

Do snapshots work like on a VPS Server?

No, the rules differ. On a KVM VPS: up to 3 snapshots at the same time, available as long as the VPS is active. On a VPS Server: up to 10 snapshots, kept for 10 days, as explained in the help How to create and restore a snapshot on VPS.

Can LWS perform updates on my KVM VPS for me?

No, the KVM VPS does not have a managed-service option. Technical support remains available to guide you. If you want LWS to maintain your server for you, that is offered by the VPS Server range, in managed mode.

I am root: where should I start to secure my VPS?

Connect using an SSH key rather than a password, then restrict SSH access to keys only: follow the help articles How to connect to your LWS VPS with an SSH key and How to secure SSH access on an LWS VPS: keys only and fail2ban.
