Email error codes related to the mail_php file volume: LPI-SIZEXX

Procédure

Service concerned : standard email domain and hosting package LWS, Pro email
Concerned panel : LWS Panel
Level : beginner

The codes LPI-SIZE01 and LPI-SIZE11 appear when a website or a PHP script has sent a large volume of files by email.

This help will allow you to understand the threshold reached, find the script behind the sending, and reduce the volume of files transmitted.

What do the LPI-SIZE codes mean?

The PHP function mail() allows your website to send messages automatically. It can be used by a contact form, an online store, an extension, or a scheduled task.

The LPI-SIZE codes concern the total volume of files transmitted in these messages during a given period.

Code Observed file volume Reference period Blocking
LPI-SIZE01 More than 250 MB 1 hour None
LPI-SIZE11 More than 2,500 MB 24 hours None

These thresholds correspond to the two notifications previously presented separately in the help articles LPI-SIZE01 and LPI-SIZE11.

These codes are volume notifications. They do not, by themselves, block the PHP function mail().

The indicated volume may correspond to a large file, but also to several smaller files sent in many messages.

Find the relevant emails

The Mail tracking / Mail access tool in the LWS Panel lets you view messages sent from your hosting account.

  1. Go to the management page of the relevant hosting account in your LWS client area.
  2. In the Email addresses section, click Mail tracking / Mail access.
  3. Review the list of sent messages.

Emails generated with the PHP function mail() are displayed with a sending address in the following form:

Code
mail_php@domain.ext

The domain.ext part is replaced by the domain name used by your hosting account.

  1. Click the information icon on a message line to display its sender, recipient, sending date, and status.

Compare the date, time, and recipient with the actions performed on your website. This can help you find the form, extension, or feature that generated the sending.

Reduce the volume of files sent

When sending is normal, adapt the website’s behavior to limit the files sent by email.

In particular, you can:

  • reduce or compress files before sending them;
  • remove attachments that are not essential;
  • check that the same file is not sent multiple times;
  • fix an extension, form, or automatic task that repeats sending;
  • upload the file to your hosting account, then send a link to download it.

To upload a file, you can use the LWS Panel file manager or FTP software.

A file placed in a folder accessible from your website can be viewed by anyone who has its link.

Do not use this method without protection for a confidential document. Also delete the file when it is no longer needed.

What if you do not recognize the sending?

Unexpected volume may come from a form being abused, a misconfigured extension, an automatic task, or a malicious file.

Check first:

  • forms that allow adding an attachment;
  • recently installed or updated extensions;
  • scheduled tasks used by the website;
  • PHP files listed in the logs;
  • repeated sending to the same recipients.

If the logs show sending that you did not configure, secure the relevant website before resending messages.

Update the website and its extensions, remove unused components, and change the administrator and hosting access passwords.

Check that the sending volume has decreased

After correcting the source of the sending:

  1. Perform a new sending from the form or relevant feature.
  2. Check that the message is received correctly and contains only the necessary files.
  3. Go back to Mail tracking / Mail access to verify that the message appears only once and that no unexpected sending is generated.
  4. Check that no new notification appears during the following period:
    • one hour for LPI-SIZE01 ;
    • 24 hours for LPI-SIZE11.

The situation is under control when the logs show only the expected sending and no new LPI-SIZE notification appears during the next reference period.

Common issues

I did not send any file of 250 MB or 2,500 MB

The threshold does not necessarily correspond to a single file. It takes into account the total volume sent during one hour or 24 hours.

For example, a 10 MB file sent 25 times already represents a cumulative volume of 250 MB.

I cannot find the messages in mail tracking

By default, the tool displays the last 100 events or those from the last 10 days. Click See the last 1000 events to display more results.

Also make sure you are viewing the hosting account associated with the domain indicated in the address mail_php@domain.ext.

The notification returns regularly

An automatic feature is probably still sending files.

Identify the times when messages appear in the tracking tool, then check the forms, notification extensions, email backups, and scheduled tasks running at those times.
