When sending an email fails, an error message may appear or be returned to you by email. This message often contains an error code that quickly identifies the cause of the problem.

This help lets you find the appropriate documentation according to the displayed code. It does not detail every error: each family of codes has specific help with explanations and actions to take.

This help concerns errors related to standard LWS emails and emails sent from shared hosting.

Before you start

Before looking for the solution, retrieve the complete error message. It may appear:

  • in the bounce-back email received after a failed send;
  • in your email software;
  • in your Webmail;
  • in the LWS interface if the block concerns a site or a PHP script.

The most important thing is to identify the exact code shown in the message: for example L-RATE, L-RCPT, L-SIZE, L-SPAM, L-IP, MAIL, LPI or even an SMTP code such as 550.

Some blocks are lifted automatically after a waiting period. If the cause of the problem is not fixed, the block may return during subsequent sends.

Find the help corresponding to your error code

Use the table below to identify the family of your error and consult the appropriate help.

Code displayed in the error Most common cause Help to consult
L-RATEXX Too many emails sent over a given period Email error codes related to sending volume: L-RATEXX
L-RCPTXX Too many recipients used in your sends Email error codes related to the number of recipients: L-RCPTXX
L-SIZEXX Sending volume too large, often because of attachments Email error codes related to data volume: L-SIZEXX
L-HBXXXX Too many emails returned as errors, for example to nonexistent addresses Email error codes related to error returns: L-HBXXXX
L-SPAMXX Message detected as spam or suspicious sending behavior Email error codes related to SPAM sending: L-SPAMXX
L-IPSPAMX Block linked to an IP address that generated spam Email error codes related to IP blocking for spam sending: L-IPSPAMX
L-IPXX Too many failed connections from the same IP address Email error codes related to IP blocking for failed connection: L-IPXX
MAIL-XXX Problem related to disk space or the quota of an email address Email error codes related to used disk space: MAIL-XXX
L-MQS1 Sending queue full L-MQS1 error code
L-EXPIRE Expired plan or suspended service L-EXPIRE error code
LPI-RATE Too many emails sent from a website or PHP script LPI-RATE error code
LPI-SIZE Sending volume too large from a website or PHP script LPI-SIZE error code
550, 552, 553, 451, 421 or another SMTP code Error returned by a mail server Understanding the main email error codes and their meaning

If your code contains additional letters or numbers, first look for the beginning of the code. For example, a code starting with L-RATE belongs to the L-RATEXX family.

I do not recognize the sends indicated in the error

If the error message indicates a large number of sends even though you did not send anything, it may be:

  • an email address password compromise;
  • an email client configured on a device you no longer use;
  • a website that sends too many emails;
  • a contact form exploited to send spam;
  • a script installed on your hosting.

If you do not recognize the sends indicated by the error message, your email address, device or website may be compromised. Change the password for the address concerned and check the devices, forms or scripts that use it.

In this case, start by:

  1. Changing the password of the email address concerned.
  2. Updating this password in your email software.
  3. Checking the devices connected to this address.
  4. Checking the contact forms or sending scripts present on your website.
  5. Consulting the help corresponding to the displayed error code.

How to check that the problem is solved?

After applying the recommendations in the help corresponding to your error code, perform another test send.

The problem is usually solved if:

  • the email is sent correctly;
  • you no longer receive a bounce-back error message;
  • the same error code does not appear again;
  • the block does not return after a few more sends.

If the test email is sent successfully and no new error message is returned, the configuration or block has probably been corrected.

Common issues

I cannot find the error code in the received message

Reread the full message, especially the lines containing terms such as error, blocked, rejected, SMTP, L-RATE, L-SPAM, 550 or 451.

If no LWS code is visible, it may be a classic SMTP error. In that case, see the help: Understanding the main email error codes and their meaning.

The block should have disappeared, but sending still fails

Some blocks require a delay before being lifted. If you immediately resend the same message or if the same behavior continues, the block may be extended or happen again.

Also check that the cause has indeed been fixed: number of recipients, size of attachments, invalid addresses, compromised password or overactive sending script.

The error concerns my website and not my mailbox

If the error appears when sending from a contact form, an online store, WordPress, Prestashop or a PHP script, consult instead the help related to codes LPI, LPB, LPO or the PHP function mail().

In that case, the problem does not necessarily come from your email address, but from the site or script trying to send the messages.

I do not know which help to consult

Note the exact code shown in the error message, then compare it with the table on this page. If the code does not appear, first look for the first letters or first numbers of the code.

For example:

  • L-RATE01 or L-RATE02 → family L-RATEXX ;
  • L-RCPT01 → family L-RCPTXX ;
  • L-SIZE01 → family L-SIZEXX ;
  • 550 → generic SMTP error.
