This help concerns errors related to standard LWS emails and sending from a shared hosting plan.

Before you begin

Before looking for the solution, retrieve the full error message. It may appear:

  • in the return email received after a failed send;
  • in your email software;
  • in your Webmail;
  • in the LWS interface if the block concerns a website or a PHP script.

The most important thing is to identify the exact code shown in the message: for example L-RATE, L-RCPT, L-SIZE, L-SPAM, L-IP, MAIL, LPI or even an SMTP code such as 550.

Some blocks are lifted automatically after a waiting period. [PERSON_NAME] the cause of the problem is not corrected, the block may return during subsequent sends.

Find the help matching your error code

Use the table [PERSON_NAME] consult the appropriate help.

550, 552, 553, 451, 421 or other SMTP code Error returned by a mail server Understanding the main email error codes and their meaning

If your code contains additional letters or numbers, first look for the beginning of the code. For example, a code starting with L-RATE belongs to the L-RATEXX family.

I do not recognize the sends indicated in the error

If the error message indicates a large number of sends even though you did not send anything, it may be:

  • a compromised email address password;
  • email software configured on a device you no longer use;
  • a website sending too many emails;
  • a contact form being exploited to send spam;
  • a script installed on your hosting plan.

If you do not recognize the sends indicated by the error message, your email address, device, or website may be compromised. [PERSON_NAME] the password for the affected address and check the devices, forms, or [PERSON_NAME] use it.

In this case, start by:

  1. Changing the password for the affected email address.
  2. Updating that password in your email software.
  3. Checking the devices connected to this address.
  4. Checking the contact forms or sending scripts present on your website.
  5. Consulting the help corresponding to the error code displayed.

How do you check that the problem is fixed?

After applying [PERSON_NAME] corresponding to your error code, perform a new test send.

The problem is usually solved if:

  • the email is sent correctly;
  • you no longer receive a returned error message;
  • the same error code does not appear again;
  • the block does not return after a few more sends.

If the test email is sent successfully and no new error message is returned, the configuration or block has probably been corrected.

Common issues

I cannot find the error code in the received message

Read the full message again, especially the lines containing terms such as error, blocked, rejected, SMTP, L-RATE, L-SPAM, 550 or 451.

If no LWS code is visible, it may be a classic SMTP error. In that case, see the help: Understanding the main email error codes and their meaning.

The block should have disappeared, but sending still fails

Some blocks require a delay before they are lifted. [PERSON_NAME], the block may be extended or recur.

Also check that the cause has indeed been corrected: [ADDRESS], attachment size, invalid addresses, compromised password, or overly active sending script.

The error concerns my website and not my mailbox

If the error appears when sending from a contact form, an online store, WordPress, Prestashop or a PHP script, consult instead the help related to the codes LPI, LPB, LPO or to the PHP function mail().

In that case, the problem does not necessarily come from your email address, [ADDRESS] website or the script [PERSON_NAME] messages.

[PERSON_NAME] help should I consult

Note the exact code shown in the error message, then compare it with the table on this page. If the code does not appear, first look for the first letters or first numbers of the code.

For example:

  • L-RATE01 or L-RATE02 → family L-RATEXX ;
  • L-RCPT01 → family L-RCPTXX ;
  • L-SIZE01 → family L-SIZEXX ;
  • 550 → generic SMTP error.
