Host n8n or an application that runs continuously: switch to a KVM VPS

Procédure

To host n8n or any other application that must run continuously (a bot, a program that processes tasks continuously, an MCP server…), you need a KVM VPS. Shared cPanel web hosting is not suitable for this type of application. On a KVM VPS, you are the server administrator, and LWS offers a ready-to-use n8n template that can be installed in just a few clicks.

Why shared cPanel hosting is not suitable

n8n is not just about displaying pages: it must run continuously, with processes and background tasks active at all times to execute your workflows. Shared cPanel hosting shares the same server among many sites. It is not designed for applications that run continuously, and it limits the number of processes (programs running at the same time) for each account:

cPanel planMaximum processes
cPanel M45
cPanel L80
cPanel XL100

This is not a language issue. Node.js, Python and Ruby are indeed available on the three cPanel plans, but for standard web applications that respond to visits to your site. It is the permanent operation that is the problem, not the language.

On an LWS Panel hosting plan (Perso, Starter, Performance), Node.js and Python are not part of the features offered: they are reserved for the cPanel offer.

What a KVM VPS changes

A KVM VPS is a virtual server with dedicated resources (CPU, memory, disk) and full root access via SSH: you can install and run your applications on it freely. It is available in four plans (S, M, L and XL), compared on the LWS KVM VPS page. The n8n template is available on all four.

Each KVM VPS includes daily automatic backups, provided free for 30 days, and up to 3 free snapshots (server snapshots), to be created for example before an update.

Install n8n on a KVM VPS

The easiest option is to choose the n8n template when ordering: n8n is then preinstalled on Ubuntu 24.04. This is also what the LWS VPS n8n offer provides, which is a KVM VPS delivered with this template.

  1. Choose the n8n template when ordering

Order the KVM VPS plan that suits you. In the order form, open the Apps & Panels tab and select n8n.

  2. Open the delivery email

Once the VPS is activated, you will receive an email with the address of your n8n interface and your root SSH access. Keep it safe.

  3. Create your n8n administrator account

Open the n8n interface address indicated in the email. During this first access, you create your administrator account: this is the one you will then use to log in to n8n.

  4. Secure your server’s SSH access

The root account gives full rights on the server: protect it from the start. Follow the help articles How to connect to your LWS VPS with an SSH key then How to secure SSH access to an LWS VPS: keys only and fail2ban.

You already have a KVM VPS

You can install the n8n template by reinstalling: in the KVM panel, under Reinstallation, choose n8n in Select the template to install, then click Reinstall the server. The screens are described step by step in the help article How to reinstall your VPS with OpenClaw from the LWS customer area: follow it, choosing n8n instead of OpenClaw.

Would you rather manage several applications from a web interface? n8n is also one of CapRover’s one-click applications: see How to install CapRover on a VPS then How to deploy a one-click application on CapRover.

Check that everything works

Your installation is ready when the n8n interface address received by email opens in your browser and you can log in with your administrator account. To monitor your server load (CPU, memory, disk), see the help article How to check the status and resources of your LWS VPS.

Frequently asked questions

Node.js is available on my cPanel hosting: why not n8n?

Node.js on cPanel is intended for standard web applications, as explained in the help article How to deploy a Node.js application on cPanel. n8n must keep background processes and tasks active continuously, which shared cPanel hosting does not allow.

I forgot my n8n account password

You can reset it without losing your workflows: follow the help article Reset an n8n password on a KVM VPS.

How do I update n8n?

Updates are your responsibility. The official n8n documentation recommends updating at least once a month and reading the release notes before doing so: see Update n8n. Create a snapshot of your VPS just before doing so: if there is a problem, you will be able to return to the previous state.

Can LWS administer the KVM VPS for me?

No. The KVM VPS does not include a managed service: you manage the server yourself, its updates and its security. LWS technical support remains available to guide you.
